Bought my first AR-15
Our journey began in 2007
Hey my name is John and I am the proud owner of Calegalmags. Back in 2007 I purchased my first AR15 and wanted the look of a standard size magazine without the legal trouble. California law allowed an exemption for what they deemed “high capacity” magazines (over 10 rounds) if they were “permanently altered to 10 round capacity”. I got my hands on a rebuild kit which was legal at the time, designed an internal limiter to limit the capacity to 10 rounds and sealed the base plates shut to create a CA compliant magazine that looked like it was supposed to.
From hobby to profession
Calegalmags was created
When I would attend training courses or go to the local ranges I received a lot questions about my longer magazines and realized that other people also wanted the same look that I did. They wondered where they could get mags like mine. I began selling them on internet forums, at local gun shows and eventually learned how to create a dedicated website. I then navigated all the legal formalities to create an actual business CA Legal Mags.
Growing the business
19 years and counting noW
From 2007 to 2014 I was based in Orange County, California. In 2014 the state of CA made some changes to magazine laws and in order to continue running the business I chose to relocate to the free state of Idaho.
To date I think it’s safe to say I have modified more magazines than anyone in the world. I never thought that a hobby would turn into a profession but I am grateful it did. I modify every mag by hand and have done so since day one. Partly because I am a perfectionist and also because the liability involved.
Currently it’s 2026 and I have been in business for 19 years doing what I love and meeting incredible people along the way.
